Catalogue: Pick of the Week

Nudelman Rare Books have produced their latest catalogue number 53 containing 219 items. The catalogue opens with nine bindings by Captain Gladstone. Captain Gladstone as he was commonly referred to, was an English bookbinder working in the late 19th Century. Although little is known of Charles Elsden Gladstone (1855-1919), more has been discovered recently. Discussions with an individual related to the Gladstone family always maintained that Gladstone personally bound the books. As the degree of complexity in the bindings is such that scholars wonder if he did bind the books himself. It is thought that perhaps somebody such as Alfred de Sauty of the Riviere Bindery may have undertaken them under the instruction of Gladstone. Some of those works available are: Contes Blanc by Jules Lemaitre - $5,200; Daphnis et Chloe by Longus - $3,750; Les Ballades by Francois Villon - $3,750 and L’Enfer du Bibliophile by Charles Asselineau - $3,500.

Two items from the Ashedene Press include The Wisdom of Jesus, the Son of Sirach, commonly called Ecclesiasticus pricedat $5,500and Don Quixote priced at $9,500. The text of the first was collated by A.D. Power using the Authorized and Revised versions, with reference to versions in Greek, Syriac, Latin and the original Hebrew. The second is printed in Ptolemy type and was designed for its first use by Emery Walker, in black and red. The smaller initial capitals or opening words are in a stylized black-on-white leaf and tendril pattern, designed by Louise Powell and cut on wood by W. M. Quick and G. H. Ford. One of 255 copies, this in the original pigskin binding.

Charles Lamb’s King and Queen of Hearts, was his first book for children. The work shows the Queen making her tarts and how the Knave stole them away: There are fifteen hand-coloured engravings (including the title vignette). This first book for children was also one of the earliest published by William Godwin. The poem is one of the rarest children’s books of this period and is valued at $3,250.00

Art and the Beauty of the Earth by William Morris is illustrated by Allen F. Vigors and bound by Katherine Adams. For sale at $22,500 includes an half-title decorated with white rose blossoms and leafy tendrils hanging down in multiple colours. The verso has square illustrations of flowers, with a striking blue ornamental background. This work is further complemented by its binding by Katherine Adams, one of the top bookbinders in the modern era, who became an acclaimed and highly sought-after bookbinder in Britain and abroad, creating intricate gold-tooled bindings with tools she herself had designed.
